Goal of this assignment was to laser cut…something.
Keeping with my ongoing theme of strange wooden sculptures, I decided to laser cut some fancy stand for them, so that they can float above the rest on bended acrylic.
I wanted each stand to be custom made for each sculpture
I measure each of their bases
Draw a quick blueprint on the final form. Then I created the vector image of it in Illustrator. This file will guide the laser cutter
Before laser cutting I tested the acrylic bender on pieces of scrap. I wanted to know how long it took for it to be bendable.
The first stand had to be cut almost 4 times. I used a piece of tape to see if it was already loose inside the laser cut bed.
After some trial and error, the first piece was ready
Placed it on the bender to heat while I cut the other pieces.
Used a different type of acrylic for the other stands. The white one was much thinner than the orange one, but still needed several trials to cut properly. I had to replace the board on the laser cutter. Luckily (almost) all of the pieces survived.
First stand bended properly, but when it cooled down it became a little more unstable. Better compensate for the other.
The thin white acrylic almost became a goop.
Stand that barely stands.
Just push the sculpture a little off-center and it stabilizes.
Tried different bends for this one.
Three custom stands for three custom sculptures. Done!
